What is PRP?
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, as it relates to hair loss, refers to the use of a patient’s own platelet cells and plasma from their blood to stimulate hair growth. Platelets are a part of our blood cells and they are rich in various growth factors and cytokines. The platelets have a lot of growth factors which can be beneficial in many medical conditions such as the joints, combining micro needling for the face. In hair loss conditions, it is used to stimulate hair regrowth and improvement in the hair follicles.
How does it work?
They are platelets that are extracted from your blood. They are placed in a centrifuge which will spin the blood and extract the platelets. This causes the red blood cells to go to the bottom and the platelets to the top. Once the platelets are spun down two times and for a more purified concentration, the top plasma layer is removed with a specialized kit. Once separated, the PRP is spun again. The purified concentration of platelets is going to contain all the growth factors. Finally, the platelet pure plasma is separated from the platelet poor plasma to get the best quality platelets which are then injected in the scalp.
Is it safe?
At our clinic, we have all the proper diagnostic testing in place to ensure the correct results and the system we use at the office is a closed system which prevents any contamination.
How is long is a PRP Session?
One PRP session takes about 45-60 minutes.
Medical Studies in the use of Platelet Rich Plasma for hair growth
Recent medical studies in men and women that have hair loss, genetic androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata or lichen planopilaris(to calm down the stimulation) have shown improvement with the use of PRP. It has also been used in patients that have chronic telogen effluvium which is a condition of constant shedding of the hair follicles.
